Hydrogen Powered Cars Basics

Saturday 13 January 2007 @ 9:18 pm

With the rising cost of fuel, not only auto makers but the public common sense is demanding a solution to the problem. Fossil fuels burn and cause harmful environmental effects due to the chemistry of combustion.

The exhaust from a regular car emits pollutants that cause both health and environmental issues.
The supply of the worlds fuel is limited and thus a solution must be found for the future.

Hydrogen is one such possibility. The exhaust from a hydrogen powered vehicle is pure water. This is quite interesting however. One wonders if there were billions of hydrogen powered vehicles all emitting water vapour - would that mean that in the city on a dry day the relative humidity would be unbearable. I don’t think anyone has thought this through and are kind of waiting for it to happen before doing the analysis.

But notwithstanding, hydrogen presents some clear benefits over traditional fossil fuels, both environmental and cost wise.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe by mass, comprising 75% of the universes elemental mass. It is surprising that we aren’t running off hydrogen completely, since it is the natural power source for our largest and nearest energy producing neighbour - the SUN

Most human inventions mimick nature, but humanity I suppose can be excused because our science did not realise fully the energy source of all the stars at the time, or not to the degree required to push and market hydrogen as a fuel with certainty.

But now there is no excuse really. There are economic changes, need to be made. Billions of dollars are at stake with oil companies having invested heavily in production facilities. Oil would still be required, but not to the degree that it is now.

The massive oil economy presents problems of assimilation of a new fuel technology and is probably the key resistance but the public demand for a competitive fuel will no doubt outstrip the internal pressures of the fuel economy.
